Do you need a visa for Malaysia
with a Belgian passport?
Short answer: no. Belgians enter visa-free for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. Only one formality stays mandatory — the MDAC, which is free. Here is the complete 2026 guide.
Key takeaways
- ✔No visa for tourism. Belgian passport holders can stay up to 90 days in Malaysia visa-free for tourism, family visits or short business trips.
- ✔One formality stays mandatory: the MDAC (digital arrival card), to be completed online within 3 days before the flight. It is 100% free.
- ✔No eVISA is required: like the rest of the European Union, Belgium is on the list of visa-exempt nationalities. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months, with a return ticket and proof of funds.
- ✔To work, study or stay longer than 90 days, a long-stay visa (Employment Pass, Student Pass, MM2H, DE Rantau) becomes necessary.
- ✔Beware of sites charging €20 to €50 for a « Malaysia visa » or the MDAC: for a tourist stay, Belgium is visa-exempt.

Do Belgians need a visa for Malaysia?
No. For a stay of under 90 days, Belgian nationals do not need a visa to enter Malaysia. The exemption covers tourism, visiting relatives, and most short business trips (meetings, seminars, conferences, prospecting). The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs confirms that no visa is required « for stays of under 3 months », and Malaysia's visa policy places every European Union country in the « visa not required, 90 days » group.
In practice, you present your passport on arrival and the immigration officer stamps a social visit pass. No fee is charged at entry: crossing the border for tourism is free. The exemption applies to Peninsular Malaysia as well as Sabah and Sarawak.
Note that this exemption applies only to short stays without paid activity. As soon as the purpose changes — employment, studies, long-term settlement — an appropriate visa is required, detailed below and in our visa price guide. The situation is comparable to that of other European travellers.
The MDAC: the only mandatory formality
Even without a visa, one document stays essential: the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). It is a digital arrival card that every foreign traveller (Belgium is not exempt) must complete online before boarding. It is submitted on the official Malaysian Immigration portal, within 3 days before arrival (day of arrival included).
⚠️ The MDAC is free (RM 0). The form takes less than 5 minutes. Many intermediary websites charge several tens of euros to fill it in, or for a fake « electronic visa »: for a Belgian passport on a tourist stay, these fees are pointless. Only use the official imi.gov.my domains.
Have ready your passport number, the dates and flight number, plus an accommodation address in Malaysia. Our arrival formalities in Malaysia guide details the form screen by screen, as well as using the automated gates (autogate).
What are the conditions to enter visa-free?
Visa exemption is not an automatic right of entry: the immigration officer may ask for supporting documents on arrival. For a smooth trip, gather:
- ✔A Belgian passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned date of departure, with at least one blank page for the stamp.
- ✔An onward or return ticket proving you will leave Malaysia within the 90-day window.
- ✔Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay (hotel booking, bank statement or cash) may be requested.
- ✔The MDAC confirmation received by email, to show if requested.
The 90-day tourist stay cannot in principle be extended on the spot: Malaysian Immigration grants it only in exceptional circumstances (illness, accident). To stay longer, you must exit and re-enter (repeated « visa runs » are increasingly scrutinised) or switch to a long-stay visa. Our page on visa and residence permit renewal covers this.

What about working, studying or settling?
The 90-day exemption allows no paid activity. A Belgian who lands a job in Malaysia must obtain an Employment Pass, sponsored and funded by the Malaysian employer through the ESD. The full breakdown of costs and categories is in our visas and work permits guide.
For studies, it is a Student Pass via the institution and the EMGS agency. Digital nomads can target the DE Rantau visa (minimum income of USD 24,000/year for tech profiles), and retirees or people of independent means the MM2H programme, granted on a bank deposit across three tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum). Each status has its own income and duration conditions.
Before settling for the long term, assess your monthly budget: our page on the cost of living in Malaysia gives realistic ranges per spending category.

The tourist stay cannot be extended at a counter, except in cases of force majeure. The legal options to stay longer are to switch to an appropriate visa (work, studies, MM2H, DE Rantau) or, for dual nationals, to know the rules: see our feature on dual nationality in Malaysia.
