Arriving in Malaysia:
Formalities and First Steps
Navigate the immigration process with confidence, from the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) to your very first steps on Malaysian soil.
MDAC Required
Essential for ALL travellers (with a few exceptions). Submit it online 3 days before you land.
Passport & Validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of entry, with no exceptions.
Proof of Onward Travel
A return or onward ticket is frequently required by airlines before they let you board.
Everything you need to know about the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)
Since December 2023, Malaysia has modernised its entry process by introducing the MDAC. By 2026, this step has become the absolute norm. It is not a visa, but a mandatory arrival declaration.
Deadline: Must be completed within the 3 days (72 hours) before you arrive.
Cost: Completely FREE. Beware of third-party sites that charge a fee.
Exception: Permanent residents and holders of long-stay passes (work, MM2H) generally do not need one.
To learn more about the types of stay permitted after this step, see our guide to visas and work permits in Malaysia.

Getting through the airport: step by step
Disembarking and Transit
Follow the "Immigration" signs. At KLIA1 (the main terminal), you may need to take the Aerotrain or the shuttle bus (its 2026 replacement, depending on maintenance) to reach the Main Terminal Building.
Immigration Control
What's new: French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals are now eligible to use the Autogates (automated gates) from their very first arrival, provided they hold a biometric passport and have submitted the MDAC. If it is your first time, follow the instructions: you may first need to go through a manned counter to register your fingerprints.
Baggage and Customs
Collect your suitcases from the carousels. Before leaving, run your bags through the X-ray scanners if the officers ask you to. Note that bringing in items such as alcohol or tobacco is strictly regulated. To learn more, see our guide to importing personal belongings.
MDAC vs Visa: don't make the mistake
| Feature | MDAC | Visa (Tourist Pass) |

| Requirement | Mandatory for almost everyone | Automatic (visa exemption for 90 days) |

First things to sort out once you're through
Internet & Mobile
Don't leave the airport without a local SIM card (Maxis/Hotlink, CelcomDigi or U Mobile). Kiosks are open 24/7 in the arrivals hall.
Currency Exchange & Cash
Withdraw a little cash in Ringgit (MYR) from an ATM. Avoid exchanging large amounts at the airport money changers, as the rates there are less favourable than in the city.
Getting into the city centre
Use the Grab app (the local Uber) for a safe, fixed-price ride, or take the KLIA Ekspres to reach KL Sentral in just 28 minutes.
Health Recommendations
No vaccine is officially required for travellers coming from Europe (except yellow fever if arriving from a risk area). However, for a worry-free stay, it is strongly advised to make sure your immunisations are up to date.
💉 Routine Vaccines
- • DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)
- • Hepatitis B
- • Whooping cough
🌴 Tropical & Rural Areas
- • Hepatitis A (strongly recommended)
- • Typhoid Fever
- • Japanese Encephalitis (for an extended stay in rural areas)
Warning
Malaysia enforces a zero tolerance policy towards drugs. Penalties can go as far as the death penalty. Be extremely careful.
