Arriving in Malaysia:
Formalities and Procedures
Navigate serenely through immigration procedures, from the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) to your first steps on Malaysian soil.
Mandatory MDAC
Essential for ALL travelers (with some exceptions). To be submitted online 3 days before your landing.
Passport & Validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your intended entry date.
Proof of Onward Travel
A return or onward ticket is frequently required by airlines before boarding.
Everything to know about the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)
Since December 2023, Malaysia has modernized its entry process by introducing the MDAC. By 2026, this formality has become the absolute norm. It is not a visa, but a mandatory entry declaration.
Deadline: Must be completed within 3 days (72h) preceding your arrival.
Cost: Totally FREE. Beware of third-party sites that charge fees.
Exception: Permanent residents and long-term pass holders (work, MM2H) generally do not need it.
To learn more about the types of stays authorized after this formality, consult our guide on visas and work permits in Malaysia.

The Airport Journey: Step by Step
Disembarkation and Transit
Follow the "Immigration" signs. At KLIA1 (Main Terminal), you may need to take the Aerotrain or the shuttle bus (replacement in 2026 depending on maintenance) to reach the Main Terminal Building.
Immigration Control
New: Citizens from France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada are now eligible for Autogates (automated gates) upon their first arrival, provided they have a biometric passport and have submitted the MDAC. If it's your first time, follow the instructions: you may need to go through a manual counter first to register your fingerprints.
Baggage and Customs
Collect your suitcases from the carousels. Before leaving, pass your luggage through X-rays if officers request it. Note that importing products like alcohol or tobacco is strictly regulated. To learn more, consult our guide on importing personal goods.

Immediate steps upon exit
Internet & Telephony
Don't leave the airport without a local SIM card (Maxis/Hotlink, CelcomDigi or U Mobile). Kiosks are open 24/7 in the arrivals hall.
Exchange & Currency
Withdraw some Ringgits (MYR) from ATMs. Avoid exchanging large sums at airport exchange counters as rates are less favorable than in the city.
Getting to the city center
Use the Grab app (the local Uber) for a safe and fixed-price ride, or the KLIA Ekspres to reach KL Sentral in 28 minutes flat.
Health Recommendations
No vaccines are administratively required for travelers coming from Europe (except yellow fever when coming from high-risk zones). However, for a peaceful stay, updating your protections is highly recommended.
💉 Universal Vaccines
- • DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio)
- • Hepatitis B
- • Whooping Cough
🌴 Tropical & Rural Zones
- • Hepatitis A (highly recommended)
- • Typhoid Fever
- • Japanese Encephalitis (if prolonged stay in rural areas)
Warning
Malaysia enforces a zero tolerance policy towards drugs. Penalties can include the death penalty. Be extremely vigilant.
