Well-managed logistics for a stress-free move abroad

Moving to the other side of the world, to Malaysia, is an exciting project that calls for careful organisation. In 2026, import processes have become more modern, but customs rules remain strict. Whether you are arriving from the UK, the US, Australia or elsewhere, transferring your personal belongings is the key to a successful ultimate guide to living in Malaysia.

This guide walks through every step, from the customs forms (Borang Kastam) to tax specifics, current health restrictions and managing your currency on arrival. We cover both Peninsular Malaysia and the Bornean states (Sabah and Sarawak).

The fundamentals of importing

The Borang Kastam Form

Every import of personal goods must be declared using the official Borang Kastam form. For expats, this is usually form No. 1. You will need to provide a full packing list, your purchase invoices (for new items less than 6 months old) and a copy of your passport along with your Malaysian work visa.

Customs documents

No departure tax at boarding

Good news for travellers: no airport tax is charged to passengers when boarding in Malaysia. This practical detail often reassures newcomers about managing their immediate budget at the airport.

2026 Health Info

The MySejahtera app remains required for health tracking and declaring sensitive goods.

Currency controls

Malaysia enforces strict regulations on the import and export of currency.

  • Declaration required above USD 10,000 (or equivalent).
  • Specific limits on physical Malaysian Ringgit.
  • Heavy penalties for failing to declare.

Sabah & Sarawak: rules of their own

Heads up! East Malaysia (Borneo) has its own autonomy over immigration and customs. Even if you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, you will have to clear immigration again and possibly customs too. Make sure you get the correct stamps to avoid serious legal trouble such as overstaying or illegal importation.

International Moving Calculator

Estimate the cost and volume of your shipment to Malaysia.

Tip: A two-bedroom home is around 15-20 m³.

Shipping methods: LCL vs FCL

The choice between **FCL** (Full Container Load) and **LCL** (Less than Container Load) mainly depends on your volume. For a whole family, a 20ft or 40ft container is essential. If you are only shipping a few boxes of keepsakes and books, groupage (LCL) is cheaper, but lead times can stretch out as the carrier waits for the container to fill up.

Shipping from Europe

From Marseille or Le Havre to Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur) or Penang, expect roughly 35 to 45 days at sea. Required documents include the Bill of Lading, the original invoice and the certificate of origin for certain specific products.

Safety and driving in Malaysia

If you are thinking of importing your vehicle, think twice. Import duties on foreign cars can reach 100% to 300% of their value. It is often more cost-effective to buy locally.

As for driving, Malaysia drives on the left. Your international driving permit is valid for 1 year, after which you will need to obtain a Malaysian driving licence. Stay alert to petty urban crime (bag snatching) and follow the advice on safety in Malaysia.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I have to pay customs duties on my used furniture?
If you have owned your belongings for more than 6 months and you are relocating to settle in on a valid visa, you may qualify for a tax exemption (SST). You will, however, need to prove it with an accurate inventory.
What is the CIF valuation method?
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance, Freight. Malaysian customs calculate any applicable taxes on the total value of the item + shipping costs + insurance.
Can I import alcohol?
Importing alcohol is heavily taxed. As a traveller, you are entitled to 1 litre duty-free. For a household move, importing a wine collection is not advisable, as the taxes are prohibitive and the climate does not help with storage without specialised equipment.
How long does customs clearance take at Port Klang?
Generally, allow between 5 and 10 working days once the vessel has docked, provided all your documents are in order. Random inspections can add 48 hours.
Is dual nationality recognised?
No. Malaysia does not recognise dual nationality. Entering with two passports can lead to refused entry or major customs complications. Always use the same passport for your visas and imports.
What about transiting through KLIA?
If you transit through Kuala Lumpur without leaving the transit area ("airside"), you do not need a visa. If you have to collect baggage or change terminals, you will need to clear immigration and meet the standard entry requirements.
