Marine preservation

"Take only pictures, leave only bubbles."

Malaysia has made colossal efforts to restore its reefs. As a diver, your behavior is crucial. Strictly respect protected areas, do not use sunscreens harmful to corals, and support centers that actively participate in eco-responsible living in Malaysia.

  • Never touch corals
  • Perfect buoyancy management
  • No interaction with wildlife
  • Use of reusable water bottles

Specialized Insurance

Standard insurance often does not cover diving accidents (decompression chamber). Remember to subscribe to specific insurance like DAN or through our advice on essential insurance.

Inter-island Transport

Reaching Borneo requires organization. For Sipadan, fly to Tawau via AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines, then head to Semporna. Consult our guide on national transport.

Local Equipment

Kuala Lumpur has excellent specialized stores. If you live there, buying your own mask and dive computer is a worthwhile investment for your daily life.

Expat diver

"Living in Malaysia has allowed me to turn my passion into a way of life. I passed my Divemaster in the Perhentians and every long weekend is an opportunity to go back and explore the waters of Sabah. It's an accessible luxury."

Frequently Asked Questions (Diving)

Do you have to be an expert to dive at Sipadan? +
Most centers require at least an Advanced Open Water certification and about 20 logged dives due to the sometimes strong currents and depth of the sites.
What is the average price of a "Fun Dive"? +
On the East Coast, count about RM 120 to RM 180 per dive. In Borneo, prices are higher, especially for Sipadan where the day package (3 dives + permit) can reach RM 1200 to RM 1500.
Can you dive all year round in Malaysia? +
Yes, because when the East Coast closes (November to February), the West Coast or certain areas of Borneo remain accessible. Borneo can be dived globally all year round, although visibility varies.
Where can you see whale sharks? +
Lankayan and Tenggol are the best spots. The season generally runs from March to May.
Are dive centers safe? +
The majority of centers are affiliated with PADI or SSI and respect strict international standards. Always check recent reviews and the condition of the equipment before committing.
Are there decompression chambers nearby? +
The main chambers are in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, and Singapore. This is why evacuation insurance is vital. Consult our Health in Malaysia section.
