Why choose Malaysia in 2026?

In 2026, Malaysia stands out more than ever as the strategic crossroads of Southeast Asia. Between futuristic cities like Kuala Lumpur and its ancient jungles, the country offers a rare balance. Driven by tech innovation and sustainable tourism, the Malaysian economy is attracting a growing wave of international talent.

Whether you are a professional looking for new opportunities, a family seeking a safe environment with top-tier international schools, or a retiree wanting to enjoy a mild climate, Malaysia has something for every profile. The widespread use of English and the legendary warmth of Malaysians make for an easy integration that few countries in the region can match.

That said, a successful move abroad is never improvised. From the ins and outs of the MM2H programme to the new tax rules for digital nomads (DE Rantau), this guide breaks down the essentials for a hassle-free transition.

The Expat Journey: A Timeline

01

6 months before: The Strategy

This is the time to define your status. If you are looking for a job, activate your LinkedIn network and check our dedicated page on working in Malaysia. If you are an entrepreneur, start exploring company formation structures. Gather your original documents (diplomas, birth certificates), which will need to be certified and sometimes translated.

02

4 months before: Formalities and Health

Begin the visa procedures. Note that for an Employment Pass, it is your employer who initiates the process through the ESD portal (Expatriate Services Division). On the health side, check your vaccinations and take out comprehensive international insurance, as you will not be covered by the local Malaysian system.

03

2 months before: Logistics and Moving

Arrange the shipping of your belongings. Sea freight to Port Klang takes roughly 4 to 6 weeks from Europe. In parallel, start narrowing down neighbourhoods: Mont Kiara for its family-friendly, French-speaking vibe, Bangsar for its trendy atmosphere, or KLCC for urban energy. See our tips on renting in Kuala Lumpur.

04

The final week: The Big Leap

Get ready for your first days: book temporary accommodation, buy a local SIM card (CelcomDigi or Maxis are recommended), and open your Malaysian bank account as soon as your visa is stamped in your passport.
